The Caesar - just in case you aren't Canadian - the drink.... read on

So here I was looking through a magazine the other day and I stumble across an article that says Caesars (the drink - NOT the salad!) were invented here in Canada. Isn't that fabulous, thought I. The world must envy our Canadian genius. But then I read on - --- and it says that they do not drink this anywhere other than here. I said - PARDON? How can this be? I do not believe it, so me being me I research it. Low and behold I have had it confirmed from two sources on separate continents that Caesars (in all their glory) are not served there.

Hence forward - it is the mission of my blog to bring the mighty Caesar to the world. One small problem is that Motts Clamato isn't available world wide... but maybe I can ship it to you guys in little bottles. (?) We shall see.

The following is a recipe - and though it may sound odd - it is superb and will be life altering.

Caesar Recipe
Ingredients:
1.0 part vodka 5.0 parts Clamato (if you MUST substitute Tomato juice here - but it isn't nearly as yummy)
Directions: Fill a glass with ice, add Clamato juice mixed with vodka 1/5, mix in Worcestershire sauce 3 drops, Tabasco to taste, dip the glass in lime (or lemon) juice and dip it into celery salt put a celery stalk into the glass -- enjoy!!

PS - Let me just say that this is really not like a bloody Mary. It's better. A bloody Mary is like the trailer trash cousin.

Methinks I saw a 'Clamato' on a shelf in port. Will have t'comandeer th'dingy an' form a scoutin' party...

LIP PLUMPER?

Capt - I know, I know. The lip plumping post is haunting me still...you'll have to look back aways...

Um - just a note to all -- the glass is dipped and edged before the drink mixing... not that you couldn't have deduced that on your own or anything...just thought I'd point it out.

Yeah, I'm gonna fix myself one of those as soon as I find out what Clamato juice is!

It sounds yucky - but it's like tomatoe juice (or v-8) with clam juice added in. Mott's makes it here - appeal to your grocer maybe they can order it? Otherwise add your own clam juice (and I don't even like clams - so it might sound odd but it works)

Orrrrrrrrrr.... maybe we could hit the casino? (they have Caesar's in abundance)

There are a few Keg Steakhouses in the US that may serve this FABULOUS drink, seeing as they have their own brand of clamato. They also sell it already mixed at our local liquor stores here in Canada. If you live outside of Canada you may wanna ask your local booze retailer if they'll order it for you...or the Mott's kind. Worth a shot! And you can play stump the bartender. Oh what fun!
Was a little suprised to find out that this tasty treat is only a Canadian thang. Blows a Bloody Mary out of the bar.
There's a bar in Hammer town that serves the almighty Caesar with a crab leg...and other places add olives or pickled hot peppers as a garnish...
ok now I've just gone on.

Gotta say, I've been to a few bars that have a "make your own" Bloody Mary bar and I always use Clamato juice instead of tomato or V8, and I've only been to Canada once (drank Molsons).

So whether or not we knew what it was called (and now we now), we have been drinking it. Sometimes to excess.

Sidenote: have you ever substituted a decent tequila (Don Julio, Sauza 3Gs, Don Eduardo, El Corazon, etc...) for the vodka? Turns a Bloody Mary into a Bloody Maria and a bloody good drink! Everyone I have introduced it to has become a true believer.

Tequila rules! Try it and let me know your thoughts.

Yes, I've attempted it with tequila (did you doubt me?) and also with gin. Both are a nice variation. But you have to do all the other stuff too - the celery salt and the Worcestershire and Tabasco.... makes the difference.

Hell yeah...actually your recipe for a ceasar is almost exactly how I make my Bloody Marys. Clamato/Tomato juice, lemon/lime, celery salt, worcestershire, tabasco, celery stalk and tequila.

Except for two things. Double the booze and ya gotta have horseradish. Ya gotta!

While I am all for canadian pride - I cannot support any drink with Clamato juice - sorry - but I have decided that the Margarita will now be a Canadian invention.

Hmmm.. trying to be open to it. But Clamato is a tough one for me. Clam juice? How can you make JUICE from a living thing that is NOT plant life... seems creepy. And to mix it with toamtoe juice... it will take time for me to warm up to this.

But for you... I will try.

I know, I know it sounds gross - I wouldn't have even touched it if someone had told me that there was "juice of clam" in it. But nobody told me and I drank it - an oh my god - it's so good. Just trust me. Seriously.

earl - no horseradish. That's disgusting.

Beth - I second that vote. I'll have them both. (but not mixed together)

Y'know, that looks mighty tasty. I didn't really enjoy bloodymary's until I developed a more mature palate (right about when I began liking red wine). Whatever that is, I think I'm gonna have to make some of those this weekend...sans the Clamato of course~no idea where to find that stuff (V8 does the trick for me, thanks).

My only variant on this recipe would be to add a few dashes of pepper.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwww. I dolikadashrimp.

I bite.

Kat said...

Ok Liz...why do you keep saying you bite? r u a vampire just like earl?

And Carrie is right about the salt and pepper. As a personal preference I like to add fresh squeezed lemon and lime to mine. It's supposed to just be a lime. But I like both. And I lika da shrimp too. I guess a clam on the side of the drink would just look pretty disgusting. Slimy even. It might slip off and fall into the bottom of the glass. Yes. That's just wrong.

I think I should go to bed now.
I'm just going on and it's getting silly.

Um - yeah no salt and pepper for me - just ta dash o celery salt will do.

Little bite?

Ok I give in. I don't get the bite thing. big little whatever. It's over my head.lol
