Filipino Karaoke...

One St Paddy's day many many years ago - my friend Carrie from BC and I decided to go out and have a green beer to celebrate this awesome day dedicated to the worship of alcohol in general. (Being Irish I find I have a duty to do this little ritual - sometimes on days other than St Paddy's). The bar was full of these lovely military men and they were in their Argyle uniforms so - being the little devils that we are we kept trying to spot the ones going regimental.

After we tormented this gaggle of boys we met up with some friends and decided to go to another bar called the "Spinning Wheel" for a good dose of drunken karaoke. It was only after we were inside and had ordered drinks that we surveyed the bar. Every man in there was under 5'3 except my friend Keith who was 6'4 - I'm not going to say we stood out or anything... Evidently something that is synonymous with being Filipino - they are an inherently short group. Also - the karaoke was in a different language...not that that deterred us. Oh no, quite the opposite I should think. We thought it might be fun. And it was - the bar loved us... we were a smash.

Let me tell you - these little fellas could rip up a dance floor. It was like a dememnted scene from the Wizard of Oz. We were surrounded by little people and they loved us. Oodles. When we left - they all stood up (not that you'd notice) and applauded us.

We attempted a return visit but the bar had closed down. Too bad. It was surreal. Why doesn't silly shit like that happen to me anymore?

Karaoke amongst total strangers is easily the highest form of karaoke. Myths are written about it.

Once while vacationing in rural North Carolina in a townie beach bar called The Mermaid, me and my gang of merry kicked it up a notch on the grand karaoke stage. You know...something special for the yokels.

By the end of the evening we were all family. Redneck and Yankee yuppie scum all singing together completely out of tune.

Our rendition of "Love Shack" was the sorriest, funniest thing I ever saw.

PS - Just curious. Is the correct term for someone born in the Phillipines a Filipino or a Philipino? Or does it matter?

I dunno. Good question. I will consult my 8 ball and let you know....lol. It said yes to both. No help at all.

Anyone know?

yes, Earl is well known on long island for his Kerioke prowess.

Have him tell you one day about the time he got up and sang a jimmy buffet song, and then the next person to get up was a mentally retarded person who sang the exact same song, but better.

not very P.C. i know, but fuck, was that funny!

Almost forgot about that one. "Come Monday" was the song in question, and yes...the little fella did a much better version than I did.

Truth be told, I was completely shitfaced at the time and it was like a week later when we saw the "special" encore, but still...that little guy could belt a tune!

Slyde, of course, never had the balls to go up on stage in front of everyone and let his friends laugh at him. Not his style.

no way, man.

With my luck, if i had gotten up there and sang a tune, the next person singing would have had cerebal palsy and blow me out of the water...

I dunno. Enough Tequila outta do it. I mean - I miraculously sound like a singing diva so I have faith.
